Astrology can be the key to sorting it all out

What do you want to be when you grow up? This seemingly innocent question can be highly distressing as you are bombarded with so many conflicting thoughts and messages about who you are and what you should do with your life that it can be nearly impossible to quiet them all and hear the person who matters most in the conversation: you.

This is where astrology can be invaluable, by giving you an objective view of yourself and allowing you to have an honest, nonjudgmental conversation about who you truly are. Astrology focuses on your natal chart, a snapshot of where the planets were at the moment you took your first breath. It is a kind of energetic fingerprint that is unique to you and sets the tone for your life. Let me show you how it works through the following case study.

Emily recently finished high school and as the confetti settled after her graduation party she was left adrift in a sea of possible career options with no shortage of well-meaning advice from friends and family. The world was her oyster but what she really wanted was to find the pearl, the direction she was meant to go in life. She came to me just days after the New Moon in Capricorn, which occupied the same degree as one of the main indicators of career in her natal chart. New Moons occur once per month and bring with them new beginnings and fresh perspectives. So the timing was perfect, as is often the case with astrological consultations.

Coupled with this point in her chart is the planet Neptune, which represents the vast ocean of the collective unconscious. It is from this ocean that we tap into creativity, imagination, the psyche and spirituality. It can be easy to feel lost in those same waters and so people with this particular imprint tend to have a lot of confusion about what they should be doing in the world.

Music, psychology and the film industry are all Neptunian vocations, ones that either help us to lose ourselves in fantasy or help others to find themselves. Emily felt pulled toward psychology but also deeply toward becoming a musician, which was something she didn’t often discuss because she worried it would not be a practical path to take. Her sun, another big indicator of purpose in life, is in Virgo, the humble pragmatist of the Zodiac.

Contrasting with this are a number of planets in attention seeking Leo, including her Moon, which shows how she processes emotions and shows affection. Pointing out these conflicting parts of herself allowed her to acknowledge them openly for the first time in 19 years. She could now begin to give equal stock to her inner Lioness, and not shy away from her need for the spotlight.

With so much Leo energy she shares an easy rapport with children. She has a strong pull to work with them in a healing capacity, a Virgo trait, and has given thought to becoming a child therapist. This could be a good fit for her in some ways, but it does not feed her need for an audience, and this part of her chart is too strong to be ignored. A career as a musician would certainly get her to be center stage, but it can be at odds with her need for practicality and stability.

Finding a way to combine all of the major career themes in her chart is the goal. It does not need to be exactly what I described for her to be happy, but by giving equal voice to all of these aspects of herself she is better equipped to find her niche when the opportunity arises. Though her chart is more complex than I can show here, I hope this gives you a glimpse into the value and depth of astrology in helping you choose your path. There is more to it than meets the eye.
