It's easy to feel stressed out this time of year. The holiday shopping season traditionally kicks off the day after Thanksgiving, or Black Friday as it's been dubbed. Our 'to do' lists get longer and our budgets are stretched even more than usual as social obligations and expenses increase exponentially.

As if that weren't anxiety-provoking enough, this year may be especially tough for many people. Because of the economy, everyone is watching their budgets and cutting back where they can. Couponing has become the new normal, even if you're fortunate enough to have a job. You may have even had to make the decision to forego donating to your favorite charity as a result.

If so, you may want to re-think that decision. Why? Because doing good or donating to others will make you feel better in return. There have been many studies done on the subject. In one, more than half the people who worked in a soup kitchen for a couple of hours felt a mood elevation, for example.

There are several ways you can help someone that don't cost a thing and that's the challenge I'm issuing to myself for the upcoming holiday season (and beyond, hopefully). I have a lot to be thankful for. Not everyone is as fortunate.

Take some time to step out of your world and put yourself in someone else's shoes. Identify a need and offer to help however you can. You'll be rewarded in ways you never could have imagined.

Have a happy, healthy Thanksgiving!

Last month I described the first and most important principle of Tai Chi: Relax. Try it right now. Relax every muscle and, if you are sitting, sink more into your chair. If you are standing, sink more into your feet. This is something I remind my students of constantly and…
There's a change in the season. Can you feel it? Summer vacation is over and kids are back in school. The days are shorter and evening darkness approaches much earlier than we'd like. The hot, humid days we experienced are gone, giving way to cooler nights. There's a chill in…
Have you ever realized that you tend to hold one particular finger when you feel stressed or anxious? Have you ever wondered why people usually wring their hands when they are worried about something? That mystery is easy to solve once you learn about the healing art of Jin Shin…
Sometimes in the rush to find something "new" we forget about the things that actually work. It's not surprising to hear about some medical breakthrough one week that's quickly forgotten the next, in favor of a splashier headline. That's one of the big differences between the pharmaceutical industry and the…
As we gear up for the holiday frenzy, do you ever find yourself wondering, "How will I ever survive?!" Well, now is the time to prepare for a fun, relaxing holiday season! Before you stop reading and turn the page, give me just a few moments to bend your mind…
When the Antigo Goodwill Retail Store and Training Center opened its doors for the first time in August 2008, volunteer Bob Cristiano was there. He even had the honor of cutting the ribbon during the grand opening ceremony. More than three years later, Cristiano still volunteers at the store on…
If this sounds like you or someone you know, you may be in need of a creative intervention: 1. You're confused about your life in general 2. You're feeling stuck in your career or relationships 3. You feel you have more potential than you are currently experiencing 4. You need…
Artistic tattooing perceptions have gone through a dramatic transformation over the last few decades. Once viewed as an anti-establishment statement, tattoos are now considered by many to be part of mainstream culture. The reality show on The Learning Channel, LA Ink, has created celebrity status for some artists, further accelerating…
Somewhere sandwiched between Halloween and Christmas is a holiday called Thanksgiving; you may have heard of it. It gets a lot of attention the week leading up to it, but it's short-lived because "Black Friday" is hot on its heels. And even when Thanksgiving does gets mentioned, it's usually attached…
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a treatment in which 100 percent pure oxygen is administered while the patient rests comfortably in a sealed chamber pressurized to 1½ - 3 times the normal atmospheric pressure. Your body is hyper-oxygenated, which aids in healing. In this article we will focus on providing…
Cancer. These days it seems to be a common household term. We all know someone or hear of someone close to us being diagnosed. I lost my grandfather this past April to lung cancer. Even as I'm writing this article, I received an e-mail regarding my cousin's stomach cancer returning.…
There is hope, lots of hope, for anyone who is under-performing in their educational experience. It doesn't occur as fast as getting a Big Mac via the drive-thru at McDonalds, but it is doable in fairly short order. A recent client, a nursing student, called the other day to let…
