About two years ago, I received a letter from my sister informing all five of us siblings of her skin cancer diagnosis and imploring each of us to make an appointment for a screening. Growing up on a farm, we had extensive exposure to the sun on a daily basis. Back then, skin protection was not the hot topic it is today. Considering that our father and one brother both had suspicious growths removed as well, we are thankful that we are all currently “in the clear” and are more keenly aware of the danger.
July is UV Safety Month — a perfect time to schedule a screening and to reinforce your efforts to protect yourself and your family from too much sun exposure. It is a fact: studies have linked overexposure to the sun with skin cancer. In addition, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, “The harmful ultraviolet rays from both the sun and indoor tanning “sunlamps” can cause many other complications besides skin cancer – such as eye problems, a weakened immune system, age spots, wrinkles and leathery skin.” The need to take protective measures from the sun is quite clear today.
