Put the focus on YOU in 2014!

Welcome to the start of a new year that I hope is full of health, happiness and prosperity for each of you.

While it would be nice if my wish could make it so, the fact is that we truly need to put in the effort to get ourselves to this idyllic place in life. Our increasingly busy lives make it easy for us to let “ourselves” fall further and further down our priority lists. Why do we let this happen when taking care of ourselves is essential to our health and well-being?

Considering it’s the season of resolutions, this is the perfect time to put more focus on yourself! If you’ve already made efforts in this area, keep them going. If you’ve not yet been able to devote the resources to yourself, start with small steps so you can avoid being overwhelmed by the commitment. Remember, you have a lifetime ahead to ramp up your efforts! Start with the basics:

  • Make healthy nutritional choices.
  • Get regular exercise.
  • Think positively.
  • Ensure adequate sleep (quality and quantity).

Not too overwhelming, right? So, why not let 2014 be the year of YOU? You’re worth it!

This month’s issue is once again full of thoughtful articles that are meant to open our minds to all of the services, products and resources available to us as we do our best to live healthy lives. Victoria Huss shares how a bodywork technique can anchor the weight loss transformation. Carrissa Pannuzzo reminds us of the power of forgiveness. Karen Strickfaden encourages all of us pet owners to make a few changes today to ensure we’ll have more quality time with them in the future. And, of course, there are many more, so enjoy!

Best wishes to all of you as you begin this new year with a renewed commitment to healthy living!

   In health and happiness,

Jackie

Just as we thought we had fully educated ourselves on how to be healthy — what to eat, how much to exercise and what multi-vitamin to consume — we are now advised to stay away from toxins. What does this actually mean for us? We need to get educated about…
We all have ideas regarding what forgiveness is and what it isn’t. The most common of these in American society is the saying “forgive and forget.” But, upon further review, forgetting has very little to do with forgiveness. In fact, forgetting can be a very unhealthy response to injustice. To…
…“and as I read through the pages of my time in France, I was surprised at how many lessons I was undergoing back in 2000: ‘I’m learning huge life lessons,’ I wrote and underlined in an entry dated June 3rd as I sat across from a chapel in a lush…
Mindfulness meditation is now officially approved as a valid psychotherapy and counseling tool. Upon reflection, it just takes common sense to see that depression thrives on regrets and anxiety thrives on fears of the future. Therefore, learning to keep the focus of attention on present experience can create peace and…
When I was put in charge of hiring a restaurant to cater a birthday party at my office, I knew just where to go. Osorio’s Latin Fusion in Appleton has become one of my favorite restaurants due to their wide range of vegetarian and gluten-free menu options, not to mention…
Imagine walking through a department store when suddenly your heart begins to race, your palms sweat and you find it difficult to breathe. For someone with social anxiety disorder, an everyday situation like shopping in public can cause as much anxiety as someone else may feel when giving an impromptu…

The new year is often viewed as a time of new beginnings. A chance to start fresh, get rid of unwanted habits and finally make time to improve yourself somehow. In a word: resolutions. Yes, that yearly tradition of making a commitment to better oneself. I have a secret to…
As a massage therapist and pediatric massage therapist, I’ve been given unique opportunities to work on a variety of people. Different backgrounds, lifestyles, economic situations, and physical and mental differences have made for a very exciting and enjoyable ride. When you think about the YMCA of the Fox Cities (the Y) and what it offers, you may picture a game of basketball in a gym, a line of treadmills buzzing or a pool full of kids learning to swim. But you should really be imagining a child gaining confidence,…
