November 2014

Giving thanks

November is catered to comfort: cozy blankets, scented candles and hearty meals meant to touch our souls and bring about pleasant nostalgia. It’s easy to envision the “things” the season brings, but what about what it brings about in us?

It can be difficult to think of this month without jumping to Thanksgiving and the sometimes-hectic anticipation surrounding it. Every year, the fourth Thursday of the month is an excitedly and anxiously awaited celebration — with enough stress to go around.

Amongst the warmth and contentment of the season, where does this often-accompanying pressure come from? Hosting the annual event and preparing food for family and friends? The inevitable aftermath and cleanup? Maybe from the notion that Thanksgiving opens the gate to the whirlwind that is the winter season.

What the holiday is really about is simple: giving thanks.

In our everyday lives, things become ordinary. This isn’t necessarily a negative, but we tend to take things for granted and forget to appreciate the little things. Yet in November, we spend the weeks leading up to the big day thinking about what we are most grateful for.

What if we carried this tradition into our lives year-round? How much richer would our moments be?

Much, according to Michael Craig Miller, M.D., former editor-in-chief of the Harvard Mental Health Letter and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. There are several advantages to feeling and expressing gratitude.

Being thankful can help you:

Feel more positive emotions. Relish good experiences. Improve health. Deal with adversity. Build strong relationships.

Being appreciated and recognizing worth in others simply feels good, but really, being grateful also has clear benefits.

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” —John F. Kennedy

Homeopathy is a wonderful choice for individuals and families looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid or limit pharmaceutical drugs in addressing minor health and wellness concerns. Homeopathic remedies are readily available, inexpensive, have a long shelf life and are easy to learn how to use. Homeopathy is its…
On my last date I said “I love you” at least 10 times. But I wasn’t talking to my boyfriend — I was addressing my dinner plate. My declarations of adoration perhaps would have concerned the staff at Gather Americana Restaurant if they weren’t already used to other diners’ passionate…
When my husband and I found out we were expecting our first child I knew I wanted to stick with a natural birth experience. My original plan was to go to a birth center or have the birth at home; however, my husband really wanted to birth at a hospital…
The kids have soccer games, track meets and band practice. There are meetings at work, looming deadlines, workouts, grocery lists and laundry piling up. Fortunately, much of the stress that we experience is a healthy response to stimulus in our environment. Demands on our time are a normal part of…
I’ve known drummers who practice nonstop for hours, and I get that when you’re young and full of excess energy, it’s part of the program. As we age, we must get smart about how we go about our art. When you’re not a “spring chicken” anymore, it’s time to step…
Christmas is fast approaching. When you spend your holiday dollars, remember to shop local whenever possible. Local businesses are the backbone of every community and need your support. They can also be a wonderful source for unique and meaningful gifts that big box stores can’t provide. Add even more meaning…
Many people crave carbohydrates, foods containing sugar and flour, such as cookies, candies, cakes and bread and more. If you are one of those people who have tried time and again to resist the craving for your favorite carbohydrate food, there is help for you. When you eat fast-digesting carbohydrates,…
To know Foxxie Fitness is to know its founder — me — Dulcie Bosi-Schmidt. Foxxie Fitness & Wellness LLC is a web-centered wellness resource that was launched March of 2013, just weeks before my first daughter was born. Some might ask: why then? With many of the services provided online…
Hopefully we all have a good idea of what we can put in our curbside recycling bins or carts (though if you do have questions, contact your county recycling office, hauler or municipality). But did you know there are a great many other items you can recycle beyond the normal…
Hearing loss can dramatically affect the quality of interpersonal relationships. With hearing loss, people sometimes mishear things. In my role as an audiologist, I often find that couples argue about these misunderstandings. The person with the hearing loss urges their spouse to stop talking from the other room, to not…
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a tool in psychotherapy that has been criticized as “nonsense” and glorified as “magic.” One critic couldn’t see how waggling your fingers in front of someone’s face could remove the profound effects of trauma. In general, I’ve found that the critics are operating…
Think about the people you know. How many of them are dealing with ongoing health issues? People are fighting stress and anxiety, dealing with digestive problems, struggling to sleep and lose weight. Now think about your own life. Do you feel as well as you could? Here’s the sad truth:…
