January 2016

Welcome, 2016!

2015 was a year not unlike others: it had its share of ups, downs, stillness and chaos. 365 days, 52 weeks and 12 months filled with happiness, sadness, laughter and tears. Looking back, it feels almost fleeting… time gone by so quickly.

And here we are, back to another January to begin a fresh New Year. We know it will happen and yet, it’s a surprise when it catches up with us. Soon, a childhood has gone by, an adolescence has been survived, and a lifetime passed.

We think January is the perfect time to bring clarity to your life. It brings about a new perspective, new goals. Be kind. Spend time with people who love and respect you, and who respect and love you in return. Take risks. Delight in contentedness and comfort. Have fun!

For times gone by, my dear
For times gone by,
We will take a cup of kindness yet
For times gone by.
We two have run about the hillsides
And pulled the daisies fine,
But we have wandered many a weary foot
For times gone by…
And there is a hand, my trusty friend,
And give us a hand of yours,
And we will take a goodwill drink
For times gone by!
—Auld Lang Syne, Modern English Version

The acai palm tree, native to tropical Central and South America, produces a reddish-purple berry. The acai berry’s name, which comes from a language of the native people of the region, means “fruit that cries.” The acai berry has long been an important food source for indigenous peoples of the…
Healthy kale and quinoa power salad with spicy sweet potato, black beans and creamy avocado sauce is a gluten-free (and easily vegan) salad that packs well for lunch, too! The holidays have come and gone for another year, and January is upon us. Did you know that January boasts more than just the kick off to a new year? January is National Hobby Month. As you relax following the holiday season reconnecting with one of your favorite hobbies is…
Each January people make resolutions to lose weight, eat better, exercise more or spend less. And unfortunately, by February, many of those well-meaning resolutions have fallen by the wayside. The key is to make small changes, which can become a habit. That holds true for all of the above (eat…
Last month I wrote about preventing colds and flu. This month I will discuss how to reduce the symptoms of cold and flu and getting over them faster. Nobody likes to be sick, and no one likes to be around sick people so it is in our best interest not…
The Jay Sauter family experienced such intense caring and concern last year from Jay’s employer, Bassett Mechanical, that they nominated the Kaukauna company for the 2015 Compassionate Employer Award. Bassett, winner of many industry awards, now holds this title, setting it apart among northeast Wisconsin employers. Founders of the award,…
“My favorite aspect of homeopathy is the natural healing from the inside out. Instead of just hiding the symptoms, homeopathy looks at the root of the issue. With my daughter I have used it for acute teething and colds, and also to address long-term healing. In both cases it has…
The dawn of a new calendar year often marks the end of the sometimes hectic holiday season. This time of year marks a return to normalcy for many families, as the kids go back to school and parents return to work. The beginning of January also serves as a great…
WebMD reported that last year’s flu treatment was only about 18 percent effective for the predominant strains causing the flu. The year before it was only about 60 percent effective. So, while the medical community is saying get your flu shot, getting the flu shot doesn’t guarantee that you won’t…
It can be overwhelming when it comes time to choosing the correct products for your hair type. The average woman has 3 or more shampoos in their shower. Step one is understanding your hair type, which can be difficult because some people can have two different hair types. For example,…
Lake Park Swim & Fitness’s mission statement says it all: Inform. Connect. Inspire. Even in its concise delivery is the underlying and straightforward message owners Felicia Christianson, Megan Collins and Jane Dias want to send to the community they’ve been a part of since 2008. Essential oils have so many wonderful uses and provide a multitude of ways to replace products in your home with safe, natural alternatives. One of my favorite ways to use essential oils is in room spray. It uses few ingredients, it’s simple and doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals! Ingredients: 1…
