September 2016

I’ve always loved beginnings: the start of a good book, the first day of a new season and the initial bite of an indulgent meal. Looking back on my school-aged days, I consider my freshman years of high school and college favorites. September isn’t technically the commencement of a new year, but it has always felt like it to me. It’s because in the early stages of a new adventure or stage in our lives there’s always a hint of mystery, and at that point there’s always the most to learn.

When you open a fresh issue of Nature’s Pathways, it’s the same. Experts in our area write about a variety of topics to benefit our community and help us grow, and until you dive in, that information is unknown. The knowledge packed in the following pages is consistently vast, and I’m always excited for readers to discover it — either for the very first time or as a refresher.

One of our most prominent messages is that we are your “partner in health,” and that’s just as it should be. We are companions. We listen to concerns and strive to provide tangible solutions. There’s a give and take and a building of relationships. It’s one of the reasons I love our business model so much.

Our team often hears from individuals seeking resolutions to problems or simply asking questions, and through our partners, we are able to point them in the right direction. If the journey to the right answer takes me on a course I’ve never been, it’s even better.

Your body was designed to respond to short bursts of stress followed by many days of rest and relaxation. For almost all of our patients this is not their reality. Many of them have been dealing with the effects of long-term stress for many months or years. Too much stress…
“Never mind, it wasn’t important” is often the response to a person with hearing loss who asks to have something repeated. It’s a hurtful response because we really do want to be part of the conversation. We interpret that statement as “I am not important.” It would help if you…

The acai palm tree, native to tropical Central and South America, produces a reddish-purple berry. The acai berry’s name, which comes from a language of the native people of the region, means “fruit that cries.” The acai berry has long been an important food source for indigenous peoples of the…

Would you enjoy lying flat on your back for a whole year? Former Appleton firefighter John Reese has done just that. The high-energy 42 year old was paralyzed from the shoulders down in a diving accident 15 years ago. Unstoppable, Reese roamed everywhere in his wheelchair until a pressure sore…
“How can I be, feel and know that I am safe with all the violence, craziness and psychic attack? What about spirits or people that are looking for their next vampire victim?” Great questions, and what an awful way to live! Who wants to be afraid of every person and…
Even though these words are familiar as a childhood game and song, they unfortunately become a frightening reality for many adults as aging and other physical and cognitive changes might cause impairments. The word “might” is used, however, as it does not have to be an inevitable part of aging.…
In 2015, analysts with the Government Accountability Office found that the average American between the ages of 55 and 64 had accrued roughly $104,000 in retirement savings, a shockingly low figure that would make it very difficult for men and women nearing retirement to maintain their quality of life into…
Are you confident that your loved ones can defend themselves without you? A friend of mine was instructing away from home after they moved to a quiet subdivision a little over a year ago. His wife, Tracy, noticed a truck circling the block. The driver stopped in front of their…
Imagine you’re traveling somewhere you have never been before. You didn’t read anything about this place. You have no idea where you’re headed or what to do once you’re there. No plans for where to eat, what mode of transportation to use once you’re there or even what language they…
