February 2017

The prevalence of hearts in February is undeniable. It is an overwhelming theme this month — the recognizable red and pink shapes are found just about everywhere from the grocery store to window displays downtown. What do you think of when you reflect on Valentine’s Day?

I specifically remember the excitement surrounding the holiday in elementary school, the crafting of homemade pouches in anticipation of receiving sweet notes and treats from classmates, the proud smiles and overall positivity taking over the day. It seemed so effortless then to hand out compliments and praise — most usually in the form of candy hearts in tiny paper envelopes.

It may have done even more for us than we realized. Did you know that both giving and receiving genuine compliments can boost our mood and mental health? It’s just one piece of the puzzle in February, which is also National Heart Month. Our cover story detailing Dr. Yasser Salem’s dedication and mission as a heart failure specialist is undeniable and lends itself to the balance of mind/body/soul health in this issue.

The distinction between taking care of our physical and emotional health is an interesting contrast, and incorporating the two is something we strive to include in every issue of Nature’s Pathways. This month focuses on heart health and how to appreciate others in honor of Valentine’s Day.

Just remember to love yourself too.

Your heart is at the center of your well-being, and that’s exactly why Dr. Yasser Salem has chosen heart failure as his specialty and his life’s focus. He founded the Heart Failure Survival Center of America (HFSCA) from the idea that heart health care could be convenient, cost-effective and provide…
The job market is fickle, and no one is immune to layoffs. Although the unemployment rate in the United States dipped to 4.9 percent in June 2016 and Canada’s rate hovered around 7 percent in May 2016, the job market remains somewhat unpredictable. Preparing financially for unemployment can be prudent,…

Before you make plans for Valentine’s Day ask yourself what you and your better half did last year. Unless it was an amazing event, you probably don’t even remember. I have a much better way for you to spend your special day this year. A day that will excite you,…
Thought you were done with school? You might want to think again! Research over the last 30 years confirms that an engaged, motivated brain leads to a happier and more vibrant life. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, over half of the adult population in the United States…
Ginkgo, one of the oldest living tree species in the world, has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine. Members of the royal court were given ginkgo nuts for senility. Other historical uses for gingko were for asthma, bronchitis, and kidney and bladder disorders. Today, the extract from ginkgo leaves…

No, not quite! But we are getting closer — the days are getting longer and the temps are slowly but surely beginning to rise. February is typically the hardest month to get through trying to keep honey bees alive. A lot of research has been done to figure out why.…
While every relationship takes work, some definitely come easier than others and this can be seen quite clearly when comparing the natal charts of couples, friends and family. Often, even when a couple comes to see me and their marriage is on the rocks, I can see precisely what it…
February is for valentines — and often that means that people are buying processed chocolate candy or mass produced bath/body products for those they love. These products are, unfortunately, generally made with ingredients that are contrary to a healthy lifestyle. That doesn’t mean, though, that you must deprive yourself (or…
Several recent studies reveal a clear link between hearing loss and dementia. While cognitive disorders were once believed to be primarily linked to the natural aging process, new research shows that other factors — including hearing loss — significantly affect cognitive health. Recent studies have also proven a correlation between…
There is beauty in every person, on the outside, and the inside. During laparoscopic surgery, when a pelvis is disfigured with endometriosis, I see simplicity. Endometriosis is uterine lining gone bad, wreaking havoc outside the uterus. Human anatomy is one of God’s creations of beauty through simplicity. I don’t mean…
