May 2010

Welcome to May! Happily, things are greening up, the temperatures are climbing and I’ve started to spot some flowers, courtesy of April’s showers.

This month, I’m looking forward to Mother’s Day, both as a daughter and a Mom myself. In the craziness that is my daily life, it’s easy to take the special relationship I have with my mom for granted, so it’s great to both acknowledge and be acknowledged. Please take a minute to say thank you to the important women in your life. (Thanks, Mom!)

On the subject of relationships, what’s your relationship like with money? It’s a question contributing writer Shelley Riutta raises in "Transform Your Relationship With Money," and it’s certainly got me thinking. Shelley points out that if your beliefs about money are positive, you’ll experience abundance and ease in your financial life. But if your beliefs are negative and limiting, you’ll experience scarcity, fear and frustration when it comes to finances.

If the latter sounds like your relationship with money, I urge you to try some of the tips she details to bring more abundance to your life. Sometimes all it takes is just a slight shift in your way of thinking to turn a situation around for the better. And during these uncertain economic times I think we can all use some positive, practical advice like that.

Karmen Smith, whom we feature in this month’s cover story, is someone who knows quite a bit about experiencing financial abundance. As the owner of several Anytime Fitness franchises, with more in her future, Karmen uses her financial expertise constantly to make sound business decisions. But regardless of how successful she becomes, she’s quick to point out she wouldn’t be where she is without her employees, who she calls her ‘biggest assets.’ Now that is truly an ‘attitude of gratitude.’

Of course, this month’s issue is full of tons of other interesting and informative articles that I’m sure you’ll enjoy. And, in the spirit of showing gratitude, I want to take this opportunity to thank our loyal readers and advertisers who help us continue to grow and flourish. We certainly don’t take your loyalty for granted and we appreciate your support!

Sit comfortably with your feet on the floor and place your hands on your legs, palms facing up. Close your eyes, sit tall, and focus on elongating your spine as if someone is pulling a string out of the top of your head to lengthen you. Visualize the string representing…
A seed is planted as a loving act. Approximately nine months later, nature takes its course and a child is born, a beautifully complete, unique human being holding the potential of the future. Unabashedly uttering its first cry, it expresses, "Look at me, world, I’ve arrived!" From that point on,…

Eating organic and sustainable foods is a surefire way to do your part for the environment. However, there are many other ways to go green in and around the kitchen. 1. Invest in quality cooking tools. Cheaper isn’t always better when it comes to utensils, pots and pans. Higher quality…
Are you in your 30’s or 40’s? You might think your hormones won’t begin to change until you are getting close to menopause. The average American woman reaches menopause (classically defined as a year without a period) around age 51.4. You may not realize that how well you feel today…
Recently Dr. Dale Weihing treated a 2-year-old female spayed springer spaniel named Annie who ingested a small amount of Gorilla Glue®. The owners contacted poison control who recommended she be evaluated by a veterinarian immediately.  On physical exam, Annie had a large firm palpable mass in her cranial abdomen. Abdominal…
To fully understand the advantages of natural vitamins vs. synthetic vitamins, the concepts of absorption and synergy must be explored. You have probably heard the statement, "You are what you eat." Actually, I disagree with that statement. I believe "You are what you eat, absorb and utilize at the cellular…

Karmen Smith is just as likely to crunch the numbers as she is her abs, but her financial acumen held more sway than her physical prowess when she made the decision to become an Anytime Fitness franchise owner. About four years ago, Smith was working as a financial analyst in…
