New dual addiction and mental health treatment in the Fox Valley

Individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders have a new opportunity for treatment and recovery at Rogers Memorial Hospital–Appleton.

“More than 17.5 million Americans are living with a serious mental illness, and of them, 4 million also have an addiction involving alcohol, opioids and other drugs,” says Dr. Michael Miller, director of addiction program development and training, Rogers Behavioral Health, and attending physician for the dual program.

“It’s crucial we understand how underlying mental health issues contribute to substance use disorder, how substance use impacts mental health conditions and that we treat them in an integrated manner.”

The dual program incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), 12-step facilitation (TSF) therapy and motivational enhancement therapy (MET) in an outpatient, partial hospitalization format — allowing patients to receive necessary treatment while maintaining their everyday lives.

In addition to group and individual therapy, family therapy is a key component of the dual program.

“In conjunction with patients receiving the right treatment, connections between people are an important part of the solution to addiction,” explains Dr. Miller. “Being connected to family members, friends and others is critical in recovery, and we should never forget that.”

Free screenings are available as a first step in the admissions process at 920-843-5660 or Rogers–Appleton also offers day treatment for adults with depression and mood disorders, OCD and anxiety, and eating disorders.

Rogers–Appleton, located at 4351 W College Ave., Suite 300, opened in 2015 and is part of Rogers Behavioral Health — one of the largest behavioral health care providers in the U.S. since 1907.
