September 2011

Are you confused by the array of supplements on the market today? How about the seemingly endless options in skin and hair care products? Ever feel completely stymied to hear something's "bad" for you one day, only to read that it's not so bad a few months later? If you're like me, you've answered yes to these questions.

Of course, today you can walk into any big box retailer and have your pick of products. But do you really know anything about what you're buying? What if you have questions? Good luck trying to find an educated salesperson to help. (Also, is the person who was just stocking the sporting goods on one side of the store really someone you can trust with your health questions?)

That's where Theresa Groskapp can help. As a certified nutritionist, she has the education and expertise to help consumers make smart choices in this area. Her belief that the foundation of health and wellness lies in proper nutrition drives her to help people be their best. She does this through her business, Natural Healthy Concepts, and its online store, NaturalHealthyConcepts.com. Unlike other Web sites, with NHC, customers are able to talk to a live human being before making a purchase, which helps them make the right decision for their particular needs.

Another subject that can be just as confusing is hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopausal women. There's been a lot in the news, and Oprah was all over it in her heyday. But it's hard to know what to believe. Erika Schwartz, M.D., sheds some light on the subject in her article on natural hormone treatments. She says, "... hormone-replacement therapy has become a textbook example of how special interests, a confused medical establishment, and opportunists can combine to complicate the issue and deny patients access to safe and effective treatments."

Of course, those are just two of the many great articles we have for September. Let us know what you think and have a great month!

Xenohormones (also spelled xeno-hormones and sometimes called xenoestrogens) are a category of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs) that are industrially made chemical compounds which disrupt communication within the body's endocrine/hormone-producing organs and have a negative estrogenic effect that differs chemically from naturally occurring hormones produced by living organisms. Xenohormones are a…
Imagine this...a holistic treatment option that not only feels wonderful and decreases stress levels but also offers relief from many chronic conditions that we live with on a daily basis. The treatment I am referring to is therapeutic massage therapy and bodywork. Massage originated approximately 5,000 years ago and has…
One of the first things a Reiki practitioner learns in his/her training is the five Reiki Precepts, or rules of conduct about how to "live" the Reiki philosophy. While living his/her life according to these precepts is intended to help the healing energy flow more strongly between practitioner and client,…
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic and potentially debilitating disease that affects the brain, brain stem and spinal cord. MS affects more than 1 million people around the world. This disease is unpredictable and varies in severity, from mild to permanent disability in people between the ages of 20 and…

As we age, it seems we take more personal responsibility for our health because we have greater awareness that good health is not always guaranteed as it usually is in our youth. As we age, we see and sense changes in our bodies that are not in our control and…
The current economic climate has consumers re-examining their budgets and tightening their purse strings. But at the same time, they're also recognizing that good health is something they can ill afford to lose. Increasingly, consumers are turning to vitamivns, supplements and organic foods and products to maintain their health or…
The statistics are as familiar as they are troubling. America's schoolchildren are inactive, eating poorly and getting fat. Diabetes rates are soaring, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that one-third of American children are obese. Not unrelated, the National Restaurant Association reports that, on a typical day,…
What separates success from failure? There are some things that come to mind: lack of funding, lack of intelligence, lack of support and the list could go on infinitely. But these are misconceptions and couldn't be further from the truth. People continually come up with these and many other so…
Mainstream medicine has been given a wake-up call on a matter critical to the health of 65 million women in the U.S. At issue are the options for treatment of menopause symptoms that cause significant health problems for women in mid-life as their bodies produce fewer hormones. It doesn't seem…
Want to use a natural remedy for your organs or body systems? Historically, herbs have been used for thousands of years, and we should use what our Creator provided for us. It's sad to read in history books that the FDA and FTC shut down a lot of herbal shops…
Fall is falling, the cold is calling. It is time to come inside. Colors are changing. Harvest is coming. We ride the fat of the land this time of year. The hot, hot is gone, gone, but the frost is yet to come. The smell of green is fading. The…
