May has me thinking about mental health. I know … there’s a stigma. Why are we so afraid to talk seriously about it?
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in four adults — approximately 57.7 million Americans — experience a mental health disorder in a given year. So, given the odds, we all know someone who may be silently suffering. Maybe it’s your coworker. Maybe it’s your aunt. Or, maybe it’s your yoga instructor. If someone you care about is struggling, don’t you want to know so you can show your support and concern?
Yes, May is mental health awareness month. It’s the perfect time for us to eliminate the stigma and get the dialogue started! Most importantly, if you are one of “the one in four,” please know that you are not alone. Reach out to family, friends or your healthcare provider for support. As I look over the 2012 National Health Observances calendar, there are so many illnesses to command our attention: arthritis; hepatitis; lupus; skin cancer; asthma; celiac disease; high blood pressure; and more — just in the month of May. Observing these awareness months not only educates all of us, but also pushes us to show more compassion and to focus more closely on a healthy, happy lifestyle.
