May 2012

May has me thinking about mental health. I know … there’s a stigma. Why are we so afraid to talk seriously about it?

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in four adults — approximately 57.7 million Americans — experience a mental health disorder in a given year. So, given the odds, we all know someone who may be silently suffering. Maybe it’s your coworker. Maybe it’s your aunt. Or, maybe it’s your yoga instructor. If someone you care about is struggling, don’t you want to know so you can show your support and concern?

Yes, May is mental health awareness month. It’s the perfect time for us to eliminate the stigma and get the dialogue started! Most importantly, if you are one of “the one in four,” please know that you are not alone. Reach out to family, friends or your healthcare provider for support. Visit nami.org or nimh.nih.gov for more information.

As I look over the 2012 National Health Observances calendar, there are so many illnesses to command our attention: arthritis; hepatitis; lupus; skin cancer; asthma; celiac disease; high blood pressure; and more — just in the month of May. Observing these awareness months not only educates all of us, but also pushes us to show more compassion and to focus more closely on a healthy, happy lifestyle.

We’d like to help you on your journey! In this issue, Tony Bednarowski shares with us some “super foods” we can include in our healthy diet. What’s that tapping sound? Alexandria Binkowski educates us on Emotional Freedom Technique (also known as tapping), which brings about needed emotional and energetic releases. And, Dr. Jodie educates us on managing our dogs’ medical care, food and environment in a naturally sensible way. There’s much more, so keep reading!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you moms out there! Take some time to pamper yourself.

Millions of people resolve to lose weight and get healthy through exercise and dietary changes each year, and countless people become frustrated and discouraged within a very short time. One of the most prominent reasons is a lack of visible, quantitative progress. That usually translates to, “I’m not losing any…
We all have the ability to sense energy. Albert Einstein’s E=mc2 and quantum physics has proven that everything in the Universe and beyond is comprised of energy, constantly flowing, changing and affecting all areas of our lives. This includes our homes, the walls, furniture and everything inside the home. Our…
Peppermint oil has an extremely refreshing aroma with the ability to clear the head, increase mental clarity and alertness, and sharpen the senses! Peppermint oil is also beneficial for reviving individuals following episodes of dizziness, fainting, nausea or even shock. Psychologically, peppermint can lift one’s mood out of a state…
The idea that one of our chakras, or energy centers, is about power hasn’t always appealed to me. I had thought of power as something that people use to get the better of each other, not something I wanted to cultivate in myself. That was before I realized that there’s…
There is a growing trend in America, a movement back to the natural, holistic approach to healing and healthcare … and Shelley Riutta, MSE, LPC, a holistic psychotherapist, couldn’t be more thrilled. She understands that, “many, many people are desperately seeking the holistic approach in therapy and healing, one that…
Swine flu? H1N1? There is always something to be scared of catching, but do you really catch something like the flu? NO! In addition to eating right, sleeping, exercising and relaxing, it’s also important to get adjusted regularly. Why? Well, if you get adjusted regularly you’ll have a stronger nerve…
Flexibility of the mind is a concept that I have practiced for many years. Being okay with everything from a mental or thought-driven perspective is the metaphysical equivalent of non-judgment. Similar to school debate teams who are able to argue both sides of an issue with equal vigor, flexibility of…
Nothing says spring like an all-consuming outdoor project! Complete absorption gets one’s winter-frozen creative juices flowing again. What could be more fun than a task that requires the use of power tools, hardware, lumber and lots of creativity? The ultimate challenge: a project that involves using found, recycled and repurposed…
Osteoarthritis affects over 21 million people. With limited traditional treatment options, patients are looking to alternative therapies to fill the gap between where they are and what they want to be doing. Traditional Chinese medicine offers a natural, complementary and effective treatment option for patients with osteoarthritis. Traditional Chinese medicine…
I frequently get the question, “Can I really make money at my life purpose — my passion?” And my answer is, “YES!” I remember hearing about a study that compared people who followed a career path to strictly make money vs. people who followed their passion. At the end of…
My healthy foods list consists of items that are super nutrient dense. That is, they have more nutrients ‘per calorie’ than most other foods. They have also been proven to contain vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that will help prevent an array of chronic diseases. These super foods are perfect…
