August 2016

It’s August!

It seems like just yesterday we wrote about snow and messy winter weather, and now we’re almost to the finish line to complete the summer of 2016. We can’t discount this last month before school begins again and fall is in the air. In fact, it seems to move at a slower pace than the rest. We come to the realization that 80-plus degree weather is on its way out so we better slow down and enjoy it while we can. Casual barbecues and outdoor parties reign supreme!

August is home to a number of lighthearted “holidays” too. Whether you take them seriously and plan a celebration, or simply use hashtags on social media (find us at @naturespathways) to commemorate these fun additions to the calendar, we’ve got a list of favorites — both the delicious and whacky — to indulge in for some silly entertainment to bring us into September.

August 3: National Watermelon Day

August 5: National Underwear Day

August 11: National Presidential Jokes Day

August 20: National Radio Day

August 22: National Pecan Torte Day

August 27: National Just Because Day

Compost is an eco-friendly way to grow a healthy and flourishing garden bed or landscape. Full of nutrients and rich organic materials, compost is often called “black gold” by gardeners for the many benefits it provides. One of the main advantages to compost, apart from the way it boosts plant…
Few things grab our attention like a mid-summer thunderstorm. Steamy temperatures and turbulent atmospheric conditions often conspire to produce amazing visual pyrotechnics and house-shaking booms. Thunderstorms occur when cold upper air descends and warm, moist air rises. When these air masses collide, they form thick cumulonimbus clouds, often referred to…
Grilled foods boast inviting flavors that put many diners on the lookout for second helpings. Quite often the magic behind grilled meals lies in the marinade used to give foods that flavorful kick. Marinades can be used to enhance the flavor of meats, vegetables and poultry. While marinades add flavor,…
Our various world cultures are coming to grips with the struggles of our social, political and economic change like we have never seen before. We are witnessing labor pains in the power struggle for some kind of rebirth, or at least a readjustment to a possible rebirth of our world…
Do you ever feel that way— like you just can’t do anything right? You can’t catch a break. Everything seems to go “wrong,” no matter how you prepare. Every light turns red just as you approach it. Every day. And every radio station is on commercial break while you sit…
Community-based farmers markets can introduce shoppers to an array of foods they may otherwise never experience. Farmers markets are great places to find fresh, locally grown foods, and many market customers are happy to know they’re benefitting both the environment and local businessess with every dime they spend. Farmers markets…
Luscious gold and red beets have arrived from the garden! A versatile vegetable with so much color to brighten any table. What I love to do is add yogurt or mayo and create a shocking pink display. Whether you take beets the sweet or savory direction they are wonderful. And…
June 20 was the summer solstice, and I eagerly awaited this magical day. The “masters” and those communicating with higher realms (of whom I am beastly jealous) had been stating that this solstice marked a new wave of energy, photonic light and ascension coming into the earth. How could I…
With an outstanding quality of life, the “Good Neighbor City” is a dynamic hub of commercial activity, recreation, entertainment, dining/night life and environmental treasures on the western edge of Madison, the state capital of Wisconsin. Unlike other cities of its size (approx. 17,500 population), Middleton features the amenities and activity…
There is some impressive scientific evidence about the power of prayer and meditation. We know that both have neurological benefits. Prayer and meditation create new brain connections. “Neurons that fire together, wire together.” We know during such activities that the frontal lobe will light up as it is activated because…
Mimi Fogarty has a unique lease on life, a perspective that is both intriguing and engaging in its conveyance. She’s always felt different, but it certainly hasn’t phased her. Instead, it has propelled her into an occupation that isn’t a job at all. It’s her life. “I was always the…
We all love our pets deeply. But sometimes what we choose to feed them can unknowingly contribute to a less than optimal healthy, happy and long life for our feline and canine companions. The truth is that we can choose to feed our pets healthy, functional foods that allow them…
