February 2011

Valentine’s Day means something different for everyone, depending on which stage of life you’re in, how sentimental you may be, and other variables affected by your environment and personality. The color red, flowers, gifts of candy and cards, and hearts are all things we associate with Feb. 14.

Another theme of the day is passion, most often associated with romantic love or desire for another person. This month’s cover subject reminds us that passion can take many forms. Ernest Bingham, who owns Fireplace Folks at Great American Chimney & Masonry in Madison, is passionate about educating people about energy efficient heating systems for their homes. Be sure to read the feature story on page 18 to get his fresh perspective.

Along those same lines, if you’re passionate about saving a little green, note that the 2011 Dane County Wood Stove Changeout Rebate Program will be held during this month only (or until rebate funding lasts). If you live in Dane County, you could be eligible to receive a $750 rebate to replace your old stove or insert with a new, EPA-certified wood or gas stove or insert or a pellet stove. For more information contact Lisa MacKinnon, Dane County Clean Air Coalition Program Coordinator, at (608) 266-9063 or This email address is being protected from spambots. As temperatures drop and the snow falls, many Dane County residents are keeping the home fires burning in a wood stove during the heating season. The Dane County Clean Air Coalition wants to remind residents of steps they can take to reduce fine particles and other emissions that pollute the…
As loving and compassionate parents, we naturally want to help our children feel better when the inevitable fever arises in childhood. Many parents reach for the popular over-the-counter products to suppress fever and alleviate symptoms with the belief that these products are reliable, effective and safe. Is this always the…
Bathrooms deteriorate faster than other rooms in your home and will require some periodic work to keep them in good repair, prevent leakage, mold and mildew as well as updating for style and finishes to stay current with trends. Following are some tips for bathroom changes in low to modest…
Like many classically trained artists, Ernest Bingham is passionate about what he does. He has an eye for detail and appreciates beauty in even the simplest of objects. But these days, he forgoes a palette of paint for supplies that are a little more "sturdy" in nature: bricks and mortar.…
Relationships seem to be on everyone’s mind, and not just in February. It’s amazing how often questions about relationships come up in readings and conversations people have with my wife, Lisa and I. This really doesn’t surprise me. After all, we all want a deep connection with another who will…
Are your book shelves lined with dusty self-help books? Mine used to be. I would pick up copy after copy of the newest diet or relationship book. What was I really looking for? Nothing seemed to resonate with me. Oh, yes, there are great books out there and ones from…
A person’s hair says a lot about them and many people consider their hair the single most important aspect of their appearance. But if your hair is thinning or falling out, it can affect how you feel about yourself and the image you project to others. To understand the concept…
One of the things you do when you advocate some type of possible life-changing cause is research, research, research. Throughout that process you’ll encounter a lot of information — some that’s solid and some that’s faulty — which you must then cross reference to ensure its accuracy. Every once in…
Hypnosis — the very word creates many images in the mind. Although you may have heard of hypnosis and hypnotism, have you ever wondered what happens in hypnosis, if you could be hypnotized and how it works? Have you perhaps seen or been told about remarkable results that people have…
