How distant healing works

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a natural technique for stress reduction, relaxation and healing. It's based on the concept that "life force energy" flows through us and around us. If our life force energy becomes low or out of balance, we are more likely to become sick or feel stress. If it is high, we are more able to remain healthy and feel happy. Because Reiki treats the whole being, including body, emotions, mind and spirit, it offers many beneficial effects, including relaxation and a feeling of security and harmony.

Reiki has become an accepted practice today in many medical settings such as hospitals, cancer centers, hospice facilities and clinics. As understanding and word of Reiki's success in humans catches on, Reiki has begun to receive recognition as a holistic healing system for animals by veterinarians and animal owners nationwide.

Reiki treatments are used for relieving pain and anxiety, boosting energy, aiding digestion and assisting owners and animals alike in the end of life process. In conjunction with traditional veterinary care, Reiki can reduce the side effects of medication and surgery, relieve pain and anxiety and speed up the healing process.

One of Reiki's biggest benefits is that practitioner and client do not have to be in physical proximity with one another for a treatment to work. These 'distant sessions' offer great flexibility for animals that are frightened by strangers, afraid of travel, recovering from surgery or nearing the end of life and unable to travel. Or, perhaps the animal simply lives too far away for an in-person session. Years of research has proven that distant healing sessions are just as effective as in-person ones.

Distant healing occurs when the person receiving the healing and the person who is sending the Reiki energy (the practitioner) are separated by a geographic distance. The distance could be the next room, the next state or halfway around the world. Distance is completely irrelevant when it comes to flow and the healing effects of Reiki energy.

But, how, exactly, does distant healing work? First, let's begin with a comparison. Think about talking on a telephone. As you talk, your voice is converted into an electrical signal. It travels miles over telephone lines, is converted back and reproduced for your friend on the other end of the line. Now, think about your cell phone. There aren't any wires used this time, but waves from towers. As you talk, your voice is converted, again, travels over a distance (as short as around the block or as long as around the world) with no wires, is converted back, and reproduced into your voice for your friend.

Energy, of course, doesn't require wires at any time, ensuring that distance is not an issue. When you first begin studying Reiki, you learn that you are more than your physical body. As the International Center for Reiki Training explains, all living beings also have energy bodies made up of aura (energy fields), the chakras (energy centers) and the meridians (energy pathways). Like our physical body that takes in food to nourish us and give us energy, our energy body does the same. The energy fields take energy in, the chakras break it down, and the meridians distribute it throughout the body.

The energy within our bodies vibrates at different speeds. Our physical body, our emotions and our thoughts all vibrate at a unique frequency, which can be perceived by a skilled Reiki practitioner. This is what allows a Reiki practitioner to "tune into" an individual's unique energy frequency.

You do not need to be on the phone to experience a distant healing session. Simply choose a time where you or your pet can be relaxed during the session. After the session, most practitioners offer some means of providing an opportunity for questions, feedback or further instruction. This is usually done over the phone or via email. It may occur 24-48 hours after the session itself. A qualified Reiki practitioner can help you decide what type of session will work best for you and your pet.
