Mimosa Books & Gifts

Mimosa Books & Gifts has been a fixture in downtown Madison since 1984. In that time, the location and ownership of this metaphysical shop have changed and evolved; employees have joined the Mimosa family, learned, grown and sometimes even fallen in love. Amid all this change, however, some things have stayed the same. One of them is cats.

Mimosa’s first cat was Kudo, who in his time was arguably the most famous feline presence in Madison. Kudo was known to approach customers with a friendly leg rub, and then curl up at their feet while they browsed spiritual books or checked out the relaxing music selection. For many, his presence was part of the relaxing, spiritual experience.

Kudo passed on some years ago, but Mimosa is still full of cats: Japanese lucky cats, figures of the Egyptian Bastet, cat-themed tarot cards, greeting cards, magnets ... You name it! The store has a tradition of supporting charities, particularly those that benefit animals. Above it all, a framed picture of Kudo still presides.

These days Mimosa carries more than just books and music. They also have a huge selection of incense, candles, spiritual DVDs, divination tools, crystals, statues and jewelry — among other things! Where else can you pick up a Tibetan mala, a feng shui frog, Norse runes, a book on shamanism and a groovy mood ring all in the same trip?

And Mimosa offers more than fantastic merchandise. A highly qualified in-house psychic is on hand to give readings every day. The store regularly schedules events, such as reiki shares and psychic nights with the well-known channeler, Akeeya. A regular newsletter keeps subscribers up to date and shares information on metaphysical topics. Most importantly, every employee is happy to provide help and information on any spiritually related topic that may come up.

Mimosa’s current owners, Diane Doughman and Ashley Leavy, see a bright future for the store. “We try to keep things interesting,” says Ashley. “We work hard to find new merchandise and services to benefit our customers. My personal project right now is to fill the store with as many fair trade, sustainable and local products as possible. Through our Web site, we’re also striving to become a global business. Actually, not just a business – a true resource center. We want both our Web site and our physical store to be places where people turn to learn about the world’s spiritual traditions and other metaphysical topics.”

Mimosa is located at 260 West Gilman Street in Madison, just off State Street. They’re open weekdays 11:00 am - 7:00 pm, Saturdays from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm and Sundays from noon to 6:00 pm.
