Bouwer Printing and Mailing

In the beginning, sisters Kathy Peotter and Lisa Bouwer Hansen were hoping for a roller rink ... instead they got a printing company.

In June 1981, Gil Bouwer was looking for a new venture and departed on a month-long “thinking” trip. Based on Gil’s history as a youth director, daughters Kathy and Lisa were hoping he would return with plans to build a youth center or roller rink. But Gil had other ideas. His search for a business built on trust guided him as he journeyed through every small town between Appleton and Galveston, Texas. He returned home and announced his plans to open Bouwer Printing, which he did in August 1981. Later, in 1999, siblings Kathy, Lisa and Joel purchased the company and have remained the sole owners.

Over time, Bouwer Printing has evolved into an award-winning small business. The company has garnered dozens of awards in international print and design competitions and has earned premier certification by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council. In 2006, Bouwer Printing was recognized by the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce with its Operational Excellence Customer Focus Award, and in 2010, the Chamber selected Bouwer Printing as the Small Manufacturer of the Year.

One of Bouwer Printing’s greatest strengths is its ability to evolve along with the market, and Bouwer has added products and services in anticipation of changing needs. For example, Bouwer Printing has developed extensive experience in direct mail marketing, offering effective, targeted programs designed to help small businesses grow revenue. According to Lisa, “The difference between effective direct mail and junk mail is found in the planning stages. Bouwer works with organizations of every size to identify their target audience, develop a list, fine tune their message and plan their release. As a critical aspect of this, Bouwer offers mailing lists of an endless variety: by region, income, marital status, age, business type, size or virtually any other demographic you can imagine.” Bouwer also offers free direct mail seminars on how to use direct mail effectively and how to calculate and maximize the return on investment for both businesses and nonprofit organizations.

Alongside this marketing expertise, Bouwer Printing also offers the full range of printed products at extremely competitive prices: business cards, brochures, letterhead, envelopes, forms, etc., as well as graphic design services for these items and for e-mail and social media marketing campaigns.

What does the future hold for Bouwer Printing and Mailing? According to Lisa, “We will continue to offer world class service to our clients and grow with them. Our additions of wide format printing, expanded graphics services, direct mail marketing and promotional products are resources for those who are working hard to grow their own businesses.” Kathy adds, “This is an exciting time to be a part of the Appleton business community. Despite the daily news of economic woes, so many of our customers’ businesses are growing and doing new and interesting things, and we are energized by them.”
