Appleton Community Midwives and Birth Center

With twenty-eight years of combined experience in natural birth, Anja Farin and Andi Raine of Appleton Community Midwives and Birth Center have a well-honed philosophy of holistic care during pregnancy, birth and the special tender days of the postpartum and newborn period. Honoring the centuries-old traditions of midwifery and maintaining the skills needed to address normal birth in all its variations, Farin and Raine skillfully blend this history with modern training in midwifery to provide families with safe and competent care during their childbearing years.

The midwives are both Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) and are recognized as licensed midwives in the State of Wisconsin. A CPM is a knowledgeable, skilled and independent midwifery practitioner who has extensive knowledge about and experience in out-of-hospital birth settings, such as homes and free-standing birth centers. The State of Wisconsin recognizes CPMs as independent, primary care providers for pregnant women and their babies from pregnancy through the sixth week postpartum.

Appleton Community Midwives specializes in twins, prenatal breech version and vaginal breech birth, as well as vaginal birth after cesarean. Farin and Raine offer extensive years of experience in herbs, homeopathy and aromatherapy to their clients for common complaints for mothers and babies. A standard schedule of prenatal care visits and routine lab work are offered, and the midwives have relationships with other birth professionals for consultation and collaboration if it is indicated in a woman’s care. Prenatal visits are scheduled for 45 to 60 minutes, and the pregnant woman’s family members and children are welcome to attend with her, which allows the midwives to develop a good relationship with the woman and her family by the time she gives birth.

With thoughtful attention to the privacy and needs of laboring women, Farin and Raine opened the Birth Center in the spring of 2012. The facility is cozy and comfortable, with a fully equipped kitchen and nicely-appointed common space for guests. Each birth room is equipped with a large, deep tub, specially designed by a midwife for water birth, and offering an ozone system to continually heat and clean the water. The staff has been certified by Waterbirth International as specialists in water birth. A woman can expect to use her own private bathroom and will have plenty of room to move around in labor. Birth stools, birth balls, and skilled attendants make it possible for a woman to successfully birth her baby naturally.

The midwives continue caring for the new mother and her baby in the postpartum period. Babies receive a complete physical examination at birth, as well as a screen for genetic disorders and a hearing screen. Additional postpartum appointments, weight checks and breastfeeding support, along with the evaluation for and identification of tongue tie in the baby, are offered to all families free of additional charge to ensure the mother develops a successful breastfeeding relationship with her baby.
