Restaurant Spotlight – Harmony Café – Appleton and Green Bay

It is my pleasure to write about one of my favorite places to enjoy great organic and fair trade coffee and homemade chai tea, as well as wonderful lunches or dinners: Harmony Café. At one location, you can enjoy the old downtown Appleton architecture and tin ceilings, listen to live music or just read a book while dining. If you have the pleasure of dining at the Green Bay location, you can do a little shopping at the nearby Goodwill store and support the community before or after your meal.

Harmony Café is a socially responsible establishment with a vision of creating welcoming, inclusive and vibrant communities. It is a nonprofit and green café that composts all of their coffee grounds, filters and much of the left-over food and garbage. Harmony Café has many programs that support the communities and those in them. With separate meeting rooms at both locations, you are welcome to book a room for your private event.

When I visited the Harmony Café today with my three guests, I decided I would have to force myself to venture from my usual order of the most flavorful veggie burger I have ever tried and often crave on a regular basis: the Walnut Burger! Vegetarian or not, this is a must-try for all. Today I looked over the new streamlined menu and decided to go with the vegan Garden Fresh Pizza. It tasted like my summer garden put together with tangy and sweet fresh marinara sauce and was served on crisp flatbread. The flatbread was topped with artichoke hearts, fresh tomatoes, leafy green spinach with sweet red onion and tangy roasted red pepper. I stepped out of the menu box and decided to make this vegan item vegetarian instead and added mozzarella cheese — and they were more than accommodating to my special request.

My guests decided to go with more protein-filled options. One went with the Cheesy Artichoke Chicken Sandwich. As she stated, “it was a wonderful homemade artichoke dip with chicken on a warm, fresh ciabatta … it was comfort food at its best!”

Another guest went with a less traditional sandwich and tried the house made CranApple Rosemary Chicken Salad Sandwich. He was very happy with his order, which included chicken salad with cranberries, crisp Granny Smith apples and fresh rosemary, all topped with crisp romaine lettuce and served on a buttery croissant. There was no need to order one of Harmony Café’s delicious homemade desserts with this lunch, as its sweet and fresh flavor satisfied all cravings!

My fiancé decided to stick with his usual choice because he loves it so much: the all-popular Tillman. This sandwich is one of the most-ordered menu items, consisting of quality smoked turkey meat warmed with crisp salty bacon, all smothered in Swiss cheese and served on a fresh, toasted ciabatta with artichoke cream cheese and leafy green fresh spinach. There are no words to describe the perfection that this sandwich is! I pick this up on my way home for his dinner on a very regular basis.

No matter what your food preferences or how picky you are, you can rest assured knowing Harmony Café will have something for you and will make any changes to your menu items as needed. Better yet, you can feel good knowing you are supporting the community and a local café with a great cause … to make the world a better place!

Before you leave, you must take home one of their fabulous desserts (my personal favorite is the soft vegan sunrise bar) or homemade gelato! And, don’t forget the many drink options, including fresh smoothies and espresso drinks to go with their breakfast menu items as well! No matter what time of day, there is something wonderful waiting for you.
